I scanned 21 Indian coaching and edtech sites for AI visibility

I scan websites to see whether AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini can actually read them, and this time I turned to Indian coaching and edtech: JEE/NEET coaching, UPSC/IAS coaching and a handful of edtech platforms. Twenty one institutes, scanned live, same engine I use for every study in this series. The result is the most polarized I have measured yet: some of these sites are excellent, some are close to invisible, and the two groups are not who you would expect.

Students and parents do not call a coaching institute to ask about fees, results, batch timings or which faculty teaches which subject anymore, they ask ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview first, then shortlist from what gets named back to them. If an institute's site is not readable by these engines: clean structure, real text instead of banners, schema that tells a bot what the page actually is, it simply will not get named, no matter how good the coaching is. I scanned 21 Indian coaching and edtech homepages (8 JEE/NEET coaching institutes, 9 UPSC/IAS coaching institutes and 4 edtech platforms) with the same deterministic AI readability engine behind my free Report Card tool, and looked at what separates the ones AI can read from the ones it cannot.

The widest spread I have scanned

The median AI readability score across all 21 institutes is 83 out of 100, which sounds solid. But the range is 23 to 92, the widest spread of any vertical I have scanned so far. Grades split into 9 A, 7 B, 3 C, 1 D and 1 F. That is a genuine F sitting in the same dataset as nine A grades: this is not a vertical with a uniform problem, it is a vertical split into two very different groups.

The split lines up almost exactly with category. JEE and NEET coaching institutes, the ones with the biggest ad budgets and the most recognizable names, scored a median of just 63.5. Edtech platforms came in at 80.5. UPSC and IAS coaching institutes topped the field at a median of 86, the strongest median I have found outside medical clinics. The pattern is the opposite of what brand size would predict: the biggest, best funded exam coaching brands are on average the least readable to AI, and the institutes that live on long form written content, UPSC coaching, are the most readable.

Structured data is still the clearest line between readable and invisible

Sixteen of the 21 institutes have some form of structured data (schema markup) on their homepage, five do not. The gap this creates is large: the 16 with schema have a median score of 86, the 5 without have a median of just 52, a 34 point difference. That single missing block of code is doing more damage than almost anything else I measured.

The five without schema follow a pattern I have now seen in every vertical: heavy on hero images, banner carousels and app download buttons, thin on any text an AI engine can actually parse. A page can look busy and impressive to a human scrolling through it and still hand a crawling AI system almost nothing to work with, no course names, no organization details, nothing machine readable to cite.

Not one institute answers questions in a format AI can lift

Zero of the 21 institutes have FAQ markup (FAQPage schema) on their homepage. Not one. This is the strongest blind spot I have measured in any vertical in this series, clinics at least had one or two. Coaching and edtech is arguably the category where this matters most: the questions parents and students ask an AI assistant are almost all FAQ shaped. What are the fees. What were last year's results. When does the next batch start. Who teaches this subject. Is there a scholarship or discount.

Every one of those questions is already answered somewhere on these institutes' own sites, usually buried in a PDF brochure or an admissions page a human has to click through and read. None of it is marked up in a way an AI engine can lift directly into an answer. This is the single fastest fix available in the whole dataset: it requires no new content, just wrapping the answers that already exist in FAQPage schema.

The smaller gaps in the sample:

  • Page titles: 9 of 21 institutes do not have a clean, descriptive page title, the kind of basic signal search and AI engines both rely on first.
  • Main heading (H1): only 6 of 21 have one clear H1 on the homepage, meaning 15 of 21 have a missing or broken main heading, the worst H1 result of any vertical I have scanned.
  • Open graph tags: 20 of 21 have them, the one area where this vertical is nearly universal and close to solved.

What to fix, for the sites still behind

  1. Add FAQPage schema for the questions you already answer somewhere on your site: fees, results, batch dates, eligibility, scholarships. Zero of 21 have this, so it is the single fastest win available.
  2. Add Course and EducationalOrganization schema so an AI engine can tell what you teach, where, and to whom, not just that a page exists.
  3. Fix the H1: one clear heading per page stating what the institute is and what it teaches. Only 6 of 21 get this right, it is the biggest structural gap in the dataset.
  4. Replace banner and app download heavy homepages with real, machine readable text: course names, faculty, results, in actual sentences an AI engine can read, not just inside images.

Method and limits

I scanned 21 real Indian coaching and edtech homepages live (8 JEE/NEET coaching institutes, 9 UPSC/IAS coaching institutes, 4 edtech platforms) using the same deterministic AI readability engine that powers my free Report Card tool. Every number in this post is recomputed directly from that scan. I am reporting aggregate and category level results only, no individual institute is named.

Frequently asked questions

Why does AI visibility matter for a coaching institute?

Because students and parents increasingly ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overview about fees, results, batches and faculty before they ever visit your site. If your homepage is not readable by these engines, you simply do not get named in that answer, regardless of how good your coaching actually is.

Why do the biggest JEE and NEET coaching brands score worst?

In this scan, JEE/NEET coaching institutes had the lowest median score at 63.5, well below UPSC/IAS coaching at 86 and edtech at 80.5. The lowest scorers tend to be heavy on banners, hero images and app download prompts, and light on real, machine readable text describing courses and outcomes.

What is FAQ markup and why does it matter here?

FAQ markup, or FAQPage schema, is code that tells an AI engine 'this text is a question and this is its answer', which makes it easy to lift directly into a response. Zero of the 21 institutes I scanned have it, even though fees, results, batch dates and faculty are exactly the kind of questions students ask AI assistants.

What is the fastest fix for a coaching or edtech site?

Add FAQPage schema around the questions you already answer somewhere on your site. It needs no new content, just markup, and it is the one fix that literally zero of the 21 institutes I scanned have made.
