I scanned 15 Indian physiotherapy and rehab clinics for AI visibility

Someone with a stiff back or a torn ligament now asks ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview which physiotherapist to see before they open a single clinic website.

I scanned the homepages of 15 real Indian physiotherapy and rehab clinics with the same engine that runs the free Report Card on this site, checking each page for the structural signals an AI answer engine actually reads: page title, meta description, structured data, a clear heading, crawler access. The headline: a median score of 87 out of 100, one of the stronger verticals I have scanned so far, though not the top (IVF clinics scored a median of 90, dermatology and hair transplant 89). Structured data is close to universal here, 12 of the 15 sites carry it, and unusually for a healthcare category, the standalone local clinics score almost as well as the multi-city chains.

A strong field, and an even one

Of the 15 clinics I scanned, 8 scored a grade A, 4 a B, 2 a C, and 1 a D. Nobody scored an F. Two clinics hit a perfect 100 out of 100. More than half the field, 8 of 15, is already reading cleanly to an AI answer engine, a better spread than most of the healthcare categories I have scanned so far.

87 is strong, but it is not the highest median I have measured. IVF clinics scored a median of 90, dermatology and hair transplant clinics 89, so physiotherapy sits a few points behind those. It ties eye and LASIK clinics, cosmetic surgery, and cosmetic dentistry at the same median. Call physiotherapy among the strongest verticals I have scanned, not the strongest.

The category split is the more interesting finding. At-home and tech-first physio services scored a median of 89.5 (only 2 sites in this group, so treat that as directional, not a trend). Multi-city chains scored 86.5 across 6 sites. Standalone local clinics scored 84 across 7 sites. In two categories I scanned earlier, diagnostic labs and veterinary hospitals, the small local players scored far worse than the branded chains. That gap barely shows up here: a standalone physio clinic scores almost as well as a multi-city chain.

Structured data: 12 of 15 have it, and it shows

12 of the 15 clinics carry JSON-LD structured data on their homepage, 3 do not. The gap between those two groups is the single biggest number in this study: sites with structured data have a median score of 89, sites without it have a median of 50. That is a 39-point difference.

Structured data is a block of machine-readable text, usually Organization and MedicalBusiness or Physiotherapy schema, that states plainly what the business is, what services it offers, and when it is open. An AI answer engine does not have to guess this from prose scattered across a homepage, it reads the labeled block directly. That is most of why it correlates so strongly with the overall score.

The 3 sites without structured data are also the ones sitting at the bottom of the range: the D grade and both C grades trace back to this same group. A JSON-LD block naming the practice, its services, and its hours takes a fraction of an afternoon to add, and it is the difference between the bottom of this field and the middle of it.

The gap that survives even a strong field: FAQ markup

Only 3 of the 15 clinics have FAQPage structured data. 12 do not. A clean single H1 heading is also not universal: 9 of 15 pass, 6 fail. In a field this strong on the basics, these two gaps stand out because they persist even where structured data and titles are otherwise in decent shape.

FAQPage schema is built for exactly the questions someone in pain actually asks an AI assistant: what does a session cost, do you do home visits, do you treat sciatica or a frozen shoulder, how do I book an appointment. Almost every clinic answers some version of these questions somewhere in its page copy. Almost none of them wrap the answer in a form an AI engine can lift directly. That is the clearest remaining opportunity in this vertical.

The smaller gaps in the sample:

  • FAQ structured data on only 3 of 15 sites
  • A clean single H1 on 9 of 15, so 6 still fail it
  • Open Graph tags on 11 of 15
  • A clear page title on 13 of 15
  • Structured data missing on 3 of 15, and those 3 sit at the bottom of the score range

What to fix, for the sites still behind

  1. Add JSON-LD structured data: Organization plus MedicalBusiness or Physiotherapy schema, with your services and hours written as machine-readable text, not just a paragraph. The schema generator on this site will build the block for you.
  2. Add FAQPage schema for the questions patients actually ask: what a session costs, whether you do home visits, which conditions you treat (sciatica, frozen shoulder, post-surgery rehab), and how to book.
  3. Give every page one clear H1 heading. Six of the 15 clinics I scanned fail this, and it is usually a one-line template fix.
  4. Write your prices and hours as plain text somewhere on the page, not only inside an image or a PDF price list. An AI engine cannot read text trapped in an image.
  5. Add Open Graph tags (title, description, image) so the page describes itself correctly when shared or previewed, then run your homepage through the free Report Card to confirm each fix actually landed.

Method and limits

This is homepages only, one snapshot in time, checked with my open-source analyzePage engine, the same one behind the free Report Card on this site. It measures machine-readability, whether an AI answer engine can parse the page cleanly, not clinical quality or patient outcomes. 15 sites is a smaller sample, and the per-group medians, especially the 2-site at-home and tech-first group, are directional rather than conclusive. No clinic is named in this study.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't physiotherapy clinics show up in ChatGPT or AI Overview answers?

Usually because the homepage never states clearly, in a form a machine can read, what the clinic treats, what it costs, and where it is. Prose written for a human reader is not the same thing as structured data written for a machine, and 3 of the 15 clinics I scanned still have neither.

Does structured data actually help?

In this scan, yes, clearly. Clinics with JSON-LD structured data scored a median of 89, clinics without it scored a median of 50. That is a 39-point gap, the largest single difference in the study.

What is the most common gap in this vertical?

Do people really use AI to find a physiotherapist?

I cannot measure intent directly, but the pattern is well established: people ask an assistant a practical question, physiotherapist near me, back pain treatment cost, before they open a clinic's own website. A site that is not readable to that assistant is invisible at exactly that moment.
